The Beloved Anam Cara: Communion Soul to Soul
Anam cara is Gaelic for “soul friend”. The anam
cara is a Celtic concept of friendship.
Relationships with an anam cara are not made
but rather seemingly unfold or are discovered.
The anam cara relationship is the awakening of
a friendship
in which the anam cara
sees you as your highest, most beautiful self
and with whom you may share the
intimacies of your spiritual journey through
life.
An anam cara may or may not be
physically present in your life to serve in that
role.

Who serves as your anam cara, past and/or present?
Focus a moment on your connection to one of these
beings.
What feeling does this connection generate within
your being?
What do they seem to see within you that calls
you to your fullness of being?
What is your highest vision of yourself?
Hold that vision lightly and joyously as you
serve, in some sense,
as an anam cara to yourself.
Who do you know or do you imagine sees you as
their anam cara?
What is your highest vision of that person or
those persons?
What would life be like if we held each person
in our circle of friends in this light?
Each person in our family?
Our community?
Each person we invited into our thoughts?
The children of the world?
The leaders of the world?
Ourselves?
What we feed with our energy grows.
We have a choice as to that which we give our
attention.
What choice feels most nourishing and enlivening
to you?
